Marian Catholic topples unbeaten De La Salle, 2-1

The Catholic League has a new script. Marian Catholic beat De La Salle 2-1 in Chicago Heights on Thursday night, ending the Meteors' perfect start at five games and extending the Spartans' own winning streak to three.

De La Salle arrived at 5-0, having outscored its first five opponents 13-5, and left with its first blemish. Marian Catholic, which opened the season 0-2-1, has now won three straight — and remarkably, all three by the same 2-1 score, over Joliet Catholic, Fenwick and now the league leaders.

The loss drops De La Salle into third at 5-1, behind Marist (5-0-1) and Providence (5-0-1), the league's last two unbeaten sides. Marian Catholic climbs to 3-2-1, squarely in the crowded middle of a 26-team table where a hot streak can move a team five spots in a week.

Both teams are back at it Tuesday: Marian Catholic visits Brother Rice looking for a fourth straight win, while De La Salle hosts Leo and starts the climb back toward the top. The Meteors' remaining schedule includes a September 18 trip to IC Catholic.
