What we count

To know whether anyone is reading, we count pages viewed, how a reader arrived (a search, a social link, one of our own emails), whether the page was read on a phone or a desktop, and roughly where the connection is — the county, looked up from the connection's address and then discarded. Your browser also keeps one flag that says it has been here before, so we can count returning readers without telling any two of them apart. There is no account, no cookie, and no address kept; nothing we hold can name you.
